Deputy Jeannette Baljeu: "Innovation in the port is incredibly important. I am therefore very pleased with projects like this one. Hydrogen is a challenge and at the same time offers great opportunities in the transition we face together. With companies like Battolyser Systems, Rotterdam will become the center of hydrogen in Europe."

The project contributes to the energy transition by making low-cost green hydrogen available. This is driven by the increased flexibility of a Battolyser® and high electrolysis efficiency. Transitioning away from grey hydrogen to green hydrogen leads to significantly lower CO2 emissions. Additionally, the use of Battolysers® facilitates the build of renewable energy. The project stands for a Just Transition and adds 150 high-quality jobs in a future-proof industry by the end of 2024 in the Rotterdam area.

About the Battolyser®

A Battolyser® is a combination of a battery and a hydrogen generator (electrolyser) in one device. As a result, the system contains the functionality of both an electrolyser and a battery. As soon as the system's battery functionality is charged, the Battolyser® can use the excess electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen can be used for industrial applications, for instance, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If there are shortages on the grid, a Battolyser® can also deliver the stored electricity back to the grid. This makes the produced hydrogen greener and at the same time cheaper.

About the Just Transition Fund

The Just Transition Fund (JTF) contributes to the transition to a climate-neutral Europe. The main objective of the JTF is to enable regions that depend heavily on income and employment from fossil fuels to enter into an energy transition in a just and equal way. A transition that takes into account social, economic and environmental impacts.

The JTF is a national program, whose implementation is regional. The Ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) and Social Affairs and Employment (SZW), provinces and municipalities are joining forces to jointly shape and implement the JTF program. The biggest tasks are to accelerate the energy transition, renew the economy and make the labor market resilient.

The funds will be allocated towards the startup of production at our factory in Schiedam. At this location, where we moved into 2 months ago, we will set up first production lines to assemble Battolysers®. Additionally, we will further develop the Battolyser® technology, specifically focused on the electrode development and stack design.
